Where on Earth are they developing virtual emergencies that will improve how first responders deal with real ones?
Florida. Innovation Hub of the Americas®.
Engineering & Computer Simulations, Inc. (ECS) is developing a software application that is used in real-time training for first responders such as fire fighters, police officers and emergency medical technicians. Based upon PC gaming technology, the Orlando-based firm can build simulations of actual public areas (such as the Orlando International Airport) and use them in an interactive environment. From a networked PC, laptop, or PDA, teams of first responders are able to simulate real-time emergency situations, using highly accurate virtual environments. Not only does this technology allow training for general emergency response tactics, it also provides emergency response teams with first-hand knowledge of an area’s layout, such as the optimal path to take in a burning building. This training prepares first responders for the real thing without endangering lives or incurring significant costs.
Additionally, ECS is in the process of creating a prototype for training National Guard troops nationwide to respond to the many new dangers related to homeland security. Preparing first responders for virtually any kind of emergency, innovative Floridians are developing cutting-edge technologies that help ensure public safety.
