DEFENSE
In 2010, Florida companies generated $12.8 billion in Department of Defense Contract awards, ranking the state 4th in the nation. Defense related spending is estimated to be responsible for nearly $60 billion of the state's gross domestic product. Florida is home to 20 major military installations and 3 unified combatant commands. The state is home to many of the nation's leading defense companies and a large pool of highly skilled workers and veterans. Florida's top ten contractors alone employ more than 28,000 Floridians.
HOMELAND SECURITY
Florida has a national prominence in many of the fields that comprise the emerging homeland security industry, including photonics and optics; modeling, simulation, and training; marine science; information technology; and biotechnology. Homeland security companies in Florida are developing solutions to secure our borders and ports, detect biological or chemical contaminants, enhance cybersecurity, ensure a rapid response in the wake of emergency or attack, and design other products and services related to national security.
