Australia and Florida:  A Strong and Growing Economic Partnership

Australia and Florida have enjoyed a strong and mutually beneficial partnership for many years. From trade and investment to scientific and educational exchange, Aussies and Floridians have been intensifying efforts to deepen their long-standing bilateral cooperation and ties.
 
The Lucky Country and America’s Sunshine State have a lot in common – a shared language and cultural heritage, ethnic diversity, similarities in climate as well as a penchant for sports and other outdoor activities.  The Australian culture and lifestyle continue to be immensely popular in Florida, as evidenced by the omnipresence of consumer products like South Australian wines and Billabong surfing gear, or the global success of Aussie-themed but Tampa, Florida-based Outback Steakhouse.
 
The Australian and Florida economies are approximately the same size, with the residents of both enjoying some of the highest living standards and quality of life in the world. Both Australia and Florida are commercial gateways to their respective regions – Asia/Pacific and Latin America and the Caribbean.  Combined with the free trade agreement between Australia and the United States that came into effect in 2005, it is no wonder than that bilateral business ties have blossomed over the past few years. Florida’s internal market of over 18 million residents (the fourth largest among U.S. states) has attracted the attention of Australian firms, who have been quick to discover the advantages of using Florida as a gateway both to the Southeastern United States, and to the half billion consumers residing throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.  These commercial ties are facilitated by a state-of-the-art telecommunications infrastructure, as well as rapid, cost-effective transportation links. One-stop airline service is available between Australia and Florida, while several shipping lines connect Florida’s seaports with those in Australia.
